The Saber and The
Ring
A Saga of Civil War Days
A Novel by Patrick Brophy
After writing and/or editing over a
half a dozen books on regional history, particularly on the Civil War
period, Patrick Brophy has turned his wordsmithing from
history-as-literature to literature-as-history, with a novel laid in
the same time and place as most of his nonfiction historical works.
The Saber and The Ring is a romantic
tragedy laid against the backdrop of the most tragic and romantic time
in American history – told, so far as possible, in the words and ways
of that time.

Past Perfect
The Tales of Town and 'Round
For perhaps too long, this obviously
unreconstructed, non expert, crotchety, curmudgeonly, contrary, creaky
"old-timer" has inflicted his local and regional history
scribbling on the longsuffering Nevada (Mo) Daily Mail and its readers.
Oddly, they do read, and even seem to enjoy them -- sometimes. Now the
best (?) of the crop, some 75 essays --- all fully rewritten and (one
hopes) improved -- plus some never before seen, have been gathered under
one cover. Profits (again, one can but hope) will go to the Vernon County
Historical Society. Your purchase will benefit the Bushwhacker Museum,
even if not yourself! The author gets only the brickbats.

IN THE DEVIL'S
DOMINIONS
A Civil War Diary
A UNION SOLDIER'S ADVENTURES IN "BUSHWHACKER COUNTRY"
The Journal of Charles W. Porter Lieutenant,
Afterwards Captain Co. F, 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Stationed in Southwest Missouri 1862-1865
Charles W. Porter spent most
of the War working out of Ft. Scott, Kansas, stationed in nearby Vernon
County, Missouri, and ranging all over southwest Missouri, northern
Arkansas, and eastern Kansas, struggling to "keep back" the
Bushwhackers (Confederate guerrillas). Each day he wrote a detailed,
literate account of his experiences.
While he took part in a few pitched
battles, Porter's journal vividly depicts the average soldier's life at
the company level: the endless trials of everyday life in a hostile
country, occasionally skirmishing with the Rebel boys --and regularly
courting the Rebel girls. Published by Vernon County Historical Society
