PAST MEETINGS

The Vernon County Historical Society meets quarterly on the second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. in the Bushwhacker Museum located at 212 West Walnut Street just off the Nevada Square. The meetings are free and open to the public.

Upcoming Meetings:
The July quarterly business meeting will defer to the musical talents of the local CCPA (Community Council on the Performing Arts), the Missouri Singers and Marsha Martin who will perform “MEET ME IN MISSOURI” (Program of Missouri Music from Years Past) Saturday evening July 19 at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon July 20 at 2 p.m. at the Fox Playhouse, 110 South Main Street, Nevada, MO.

This is the fourth year for Marsha Martin to prepare and direct a tribute to Missouri’s musical heritage. A two-hour program features songs written between 1868 and 1961.

The performers will be dressed in period costumes and will act out the songs, providing a very lively and enjoyable time for all ages. All the songs have a connection to Missouri, either by being about Missouri, written by a Missourian, published in Missouri, or performed by Missourians. The performances, sponsored jointly by the Vernon County Historical Society and the CCPA, are all free and open to the public, however donations are gladly accepted to help cover the costs of production.

A preview of the program:  The Old Order Amish in Missouri and the Midwest
Dr. Steven D. Reschly begins with the history of the Amish and related groups, with a focus on the Midwest and on nineteenth-century and contemporary Missouri. The Old Order Amish and Old Order Mennonite presence in the state in the early twenty-first century is visible and growing, with good prospects for the near future. There will be time for questions and answers on all aspects of Amish and Mennonite history and culture.
Dr. Reschly’s appearance was made available to the Vernon County Historical Society through the Missouri History Speakers’ Bureau, a program of the State historical Society of Missouri.

The Missouri History Speakers' Bureau provides speakers on a variety of topics and time periods in Missouri history.

Adult non-profit organizations, including service and religious groups, can request a maximum of two speakers per calendar year from the Missouri History Speakers' Bureau. There is no charge to the host institutions, but the availability of presentations is limited. At this time, the Bureau provides speakers to adult nonprofit organizations only and not to elementary or secondary schools (K12) or colleges or universities.

Speakers must be scheduled at least thirty calendar days in advance. Due to limited funds for the reimbursement of speakers' travel expenses, preference will be given to organizations located within one hundred miles of the requested speaker's residence.

The Society invites donations to help maximize the number of presentations mat can be sponsored and to help the Society provide this service at no cost to the host institutions.

Donations for the Speakers' Bureau should be sent to:
The State Historical Society of Missouri
1020 Lowry Street
Columbia, MO 65201
Checks should be earmarked for the "Speakers' Bureau."
